QAFQAZ UNIVERSITY

a. Foundation

Qafqaz University was founded in 1992 with the decree of Azerbaijani National Assembly and the approval of Council of Ministers. In this way, Turkish businessmen started their voluntary contributions to educational services through Cag Educational in Azerbaijan after its independence. Qafqaz University was the first and is the only foreign private university in Azerbaijan . ( www.qafqaz.edu.az )

b. Mission

To produce people with a university education at international standards and with local and universal values. Also to raise the status of education in Azerbaijan universally. In addition to this to gather pedagogical and technical background of the two countries playing an active partnership role in cooperation of Azerbaijan – Turkey.

The university has undertaken a role of being an educational bridge between Turkey and Azerbaijan. Combining on the one side an 80 year experience of law, administration and technical know-how of Turkey, and on the other side the good points of the Azerbaijani experience coming from a different system, and therefore showing a difference from both Turkish and Azerbaijani universities.

c. Campus

Qafqaz University operated in two temporary service buildings in Baku from the day it was founded until the 2003-2004 educational year. However, these buildings of 4000 m² were not sufficient as they were not large enough or technically adequate. These were the limiting factors that limited the student numbers to between 550-600.

The Xirdalan campus some 15 km from Baku built in an area of 20 hectares was given by the late President Haydar Aliyev. It started to serve in 2003-2004 and has demonstrated the start of a new era for the University. Our new service building where all the classrooms are situated has a 10500 m² indoor area. This spacial factor is a major contributory element that has enabled the university to make the progress it has since. As a result of this the number of faculties rose from 4 to 5, the number of the departments doubled and reached 16 along . Student numbers have risen in the same period with a dramaic rise to 2200.

            In the 2005-2006 educational year, the university will continue operating in a confined area of 15000 m2 of which 10500 m2 is allocated for educational facilities, and 4500 m2 for the dormitory. In it’s final form with all buildings completed the university will be operating with an indoor area of 55000 m².

d.Special Status

The university is the first and the only educational institution authorized by the Azerbaijani Ministry of Education to have a ‘Distinguished Status’ in applying its own curriculum. Accordingly the programs of Turkish and Western universities have been taken as a basis in preparing the curriculum. In doing so a ‘credit system’ was put into practice for the first time in Azerbaijan.

e.Top Rated Private University

According to Azerbaijani State Student Acceptance Committee, the university has been the most preferred private university since 1996. Qafqaz University comes first among the private universities in filling the student quota given by the Azerbaijani Ministry of Education. In the journal published by the State Student Acceptance Committee, it is stated that:

“Qafqaz University has acquired the best degree among the private universities. Also in  previous years, it was seen that this educational institution deserved the best rank among all private universities. At this university there is good organization, students receive close attention, and students who entered the university with high score benefit discounts in educational fees. Besides they are granted scholarships. The university always tries to help its graduates find jobs. As a result of these encouraging activities, this university is generally preferred by the hardworking students attaining high scores. To reinforce what’s been stated above, four of the students who are granted Presidential Scholarship are from Qafqaz University.”
